The Best Riverside Communities in London!

The Best Riverside Communities in London!
Kew Bridge Railway Station, Brentford.

The river is definitely one of the best things about London! It flows so graciously across the city, almost perfectly dividing the north from the south.

Over the years, beautiful and unique communities have formed along the riverbanks buzzing with life—boating activities, water sports, riverside restaurants, apartments, and much more!

Sunsets by the river in London? They’re not “to die for” (we don’t do that here), but they’re definitely worthy of shedding a tear! Picture clear skies, an orange sunset, calm waters… STOP IT!

Every stretch of the river has its own special touch. So, here’s my list of the top 5 riverside communities you’ve got to check out.

5. Kingston

Clarence Street, Kingston.

Let’s kick things off in Kingston, Southwest London—not Jamaica! Kingston is a bustling town full of life and energy. Kingston is home to riverside restaurants that spill onto the riverbanks, lively cafés, and locals kayaking or paddle-boarding along the Thames.

The Kingston riverside merges so gracefully to Hampton Wick on the north side of the Thames. Hampton Wick is the home of Hampton Court Park, where majestic herds of fallow deer roam freely across the park. Kingston is the perfect mix of natural beauty and lively town life having an "escape the city" feel without actually leaving London with the historic Hampton Court Palace just a stone's throw away.

4. Battersea

Next on the list is Battersea. I love how it’s in the name—Batter-by-the-sea. (Such an interesting arrangement of words!)

Battersea’s riverside community is a blend of industrial charm and lush greenery. You’ve got Battersea Park hugging the Thames with its wide pathways, blooming flower beds, and peaceful spots to relax! A short walk away you’ll spot the iconic Battersea Power Station, which has been transformed into one of London’s trendiest spots. The power station itself is a stunning example of old and new, beautifully blending massive chimneys, industrial architecture, and sleek, modern interiors.

Lift 109 inside the Power Station takes you up for a panoramic 360° view of London. And let me tell you, the view is unreal! You’ll see Central London in all its glory, but look south and you’ll catch a glimpse of Crystal Palace Park—a whole 7 miles away!

The Power Station is such a hidden gem, an amazing place for shopping and dining, offering mid- to high-end luxury brands in a sleek, upmarket setting. It’s perfect for an afternoon out, especially when the riverside is all lit up at night.

3. Greenwich

Oh, Greenwich, where do I even begin? Save yourself the hassle of trekking to the coast and instead, jump on the DLR to Cutty Sark. Everything about Greenwich screams "water"! The river, the maritime history, the old naval colleges—it’s all connected.

You’ve got views for days of the London skyline, with The O2 and the Canary Wharf towers standing tall in the distance. But Greenwich isn’t just about the views; it’s packed with history and culture. Wander around the Old Royal Naval College, step aboard the Cutty Sark, or explore the National Maritime Museum—each stop will have you feeling like you’ve been transported back in time.

And let’s not forget the food! Greenwich Market is full of mouth-watering food from all over the world!

The Greenwich area is a fantastic place in London to experience the Thames, on your visit hear, leave in style on the Uber boat. The BEST way to see attractions in London, hands down.

2. Canary Wharf

Next up is Canary Wharf, which is a bit different from the other riverside communities. Located in the Docklands of East London, this place used to be the heart of global trade. In fact, they had to sink parts of the area to make room for some of the developments. Canary Wharf is almost like an island, surrounded by water on all sides! (Well, almost!)

To me, Canary Wharf feels like a futuristic city. The glass skyscrapers, the sleek design—it’s like stepping into a whole new world compared to the rest of London. It’s not your typical riverside spot, but that’s what makes it special. There are loads of places to eat and drink by the water, whether you want a quick bite or a posh dinner.

And the water sports scene? Strong! Paddleboarding, kayaking and more - there’s so much to do here. It’s one of those places that you have to see to believe.

1. Richmond

Last, but definitely not least—because it’s actually number one—is Richmond! This place had to top the list!

Richmond riverside.

There’s a reason Richmond is consistently voted the happiest place to live in London. You can’t visit without cracking a smile. It’s impossible! Richmond Riverside is a gorgeous stretch along the Thames, offering stunning views, peaceful walks, and the kind of green spaces that make you forget you’re in London.

During the summer, Richmond even has its own little beach areas that pop up along the riverbank. Plus, the riverside pubs and restaurants are some of the best in town. Grab a drink, sit by the water, and watch the world go by—it’s pure magic.

And the surrounding area? Just as good! Richmond is packed with boutique shops, galleries, and some of the best parks in London. It’s the perfect riverside escape

So, there you have it—London’s best riverside communities! Whether you’re exploring the lively streets of Kingston or soaking up the views in Richmond, each of these spots offers something unique along the water.

Make a plan to visit soon, but until then, find a hidden gem near you!
